AT A GLANCE
With 9.4 million inhabitants, Sweden has the largest population of the Nordic countries. It has one of the world’s highest standards of living with a successful combination of capitalism and a strong welfare system. The country has an excellent infrastructure, communications and a skilled labour force.
Sweden often rates highly in international innovation performance comparisons, and it topped the Union Innovation Scoreboard 2010. High spending on R&D and universities, a supportive government, an export dependent economy and successful commercialisation are some contributing factors to this successful culture of innovation.
