Luxembourg has a population of just over half a million people in an area of approximately 2,586 square kilometres (999 sq mi).

Nearly half of the country’s population currently consists of non-Luxembourg citizens. Foreign residents represent 44,5% of the total population, with approximately 86% of foreign residents being EU nationals. The strongest represented communities are the Portuguese (16.4% of the total population) and French (6.6%), followed by Italians (3.4%) and Belgians (3.3%). With a total of 150 nationalities represented, Luxembourg is a truly plural society.

The country has a highly developed economy, with the highest gross domestic product per capita in the world according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank (WB).

It is a trilingual country characterised by the use and recognition of German, French and Lëtzebuergesch (Luxembourgish).

Luxembourg is a founding member of the major multilateral cooperation organisations such as the United Nations, NATO, OECD, the European Union, reflecting its political consensus in favour of economic, political, and military integration. Luxembourg City, the country's capital and largest city, is the seat of several EU institutions and agencies.
