The communications media in Japan includes numerous television and radio networks, newspapers, and magazines.

Japan has five major daily national newspapers with a total circulation of more than 27 million copies. Main daily newspapers in Japan are strong in urban areas, such as the Tokyo Yomiuri Shimbun with the world’s largest circulation of 10 million. Regional paper circulation is also strong, increasingly replacing the nationwide daily newspapers.

Foreign language media has limited circulation, covering a niche market. Wire services in Japan mainly focus on distributing news to urban areas, and these include local wire services such as Jiji Press, and Kyodo, and global wire services such as Bloomberg, Reuters, Dow Jones Newswires.
Press clubs, which are divided into to two types – government and private - are a unique concept of media relations in Japan.

There are over 400 press clubs in Japan and many are still operational. A press clubs is a group of major news organizations that are given easy access to information provided by the central and local governments and business associations. Other major media outlets in Japan include the internet, mobile phones, blogs and social network services.
