The Australian media have a robust tradition of free expression and vigorous analysis of public policy. Strong competition exists in the newspaper, radio and television industries as well as amongst online news media outlets.

Regulatory bodies including the Australian Press Council and the Australian Communications and Broadcasting Authority exist to promote self-regulation within the media industry and ensure freedom of the press, all the while protecting consumers and other users.

Australians enjoy 54 licensed commercial television services including three national networks and two public broadcasters—the Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). There are also three main retail pay television service providers each offering over 100 channels to subscribers.

Australia also has 274 commercial radio licenses over more than 100 license areas and on a per capita basis, the nation has one of the highest newspaper and magazine circulations in the world.
